Trump Sticks to Hardline Stance: No Tariff Cuts Without Substantial Concessions from China

In a recent press conference, President Donald Trump reaffirmed his firm position on U.S.-China trade relations, stating that he would not lower tariffs on Chinese goods unless Beijing offers “substantial” concessions. When asked about the possibility of a new 90-day tariff suspension period, Trump dismissed it as “unlikely,” emphasizing that meaningful action from China is required for any policy change.

This stance underscores the administration’s broader strategy: using tariffs not only as a tool for economic leverage but also as a bargaining chip to force structural changes in China’s trade practices. However, tensions remain high, with China officially denying that new trade negotiations are underway and accusing the U.S. of spreading misinformation.

Despite the sharp rhetoric, both sides appear to be seeking ways to mitigate damage. China has waived tariffs on certain U.S. medical goods and hinted at further exemptions — a possible signal that Beijing is leaving room for diplomacy.

As trade barriers persist, analysts warn that the real economic pain may hit consumers in the coming months. Empty shelves, higher prices, and strained supply chains could become the new normal by summer 2025 if no resolution is reached.

Trump’s current approach signals that any future trade deal will not come easily — and that the economic standoff could last well beyond this year unless one side makes significant compromises.
